MMHM Structures Ltd was appointed as the Structural Engineer for the expansion and lowering of an existing residential basement at Borneo Street, London. The brief focused on increasing headroom and creating a dry, high-quality space that integrates with the existing structure while maintaining the stability of adjoining properties and party walls.
Our scope included the design of the reinforced-concrete structure, underpinning sequence, and coordination with the specialist waterproofing designer to deliver a safe, practical, and durable solution.
WHAT WE DID
The permanent works were formed in reinforced concrete, delivered through a sequenced underpinning process to safely deepen and extend the existing basement.
Key structural features include:
Underpinning: Designed and sequenced in isolated bays to maintain foundation support and control ground movement.
Reinforced-Concrete Structure: Retaining walls and base slab designed to resist earth and hydrostatic pressures while forming a continuous, robust basement enclosure.
Waterproofing Integration: Water-bar and joint detailing coordinated with the specialist waterproofing system to reduce the risk of water ingress.
Structural Integration: Design aligned with existing foundations and load paths to ensure compatibility and long-term performance.
